Margaret began volunteering at Malachi Center over 15 years ago. Learn about why Margaret loves volunteering at Malachi Center.

Margaret's connection began with the parish and her time in grade school at St. Malachi School. Once Margaret retired from teaching, she returned to Malachi to help with the after school and reading buddy programs. She helps participants improve reading skills and provides assistance with homework.

Margaret enjoys volunteering at Malachi Center because the children are “so wonderful to come to know” and she sees how it makes a difference in their lives. Although she understands many of the students have difficult backgrounds and face many challenges, Margaret states “you are always better off if you can read.” She is grateful to Malachi Center for providing her a place in retirement to give back to the community, maintain her outgoing spirit, and “make some kind of a contribution to the common good.”

Margaret shared one of her favorite memories from volunteering at Malachi Center. She remembers partnering with a young fourth grade girl for her first time reading a whole chapter book and as the story developed the student exclaimed, “it just keeps getting gooder and gooder!”
